Palentine Mountains and Picos de Europa Route

Enjoy one of the largest collection of Romanesque heritage in Europe: in the Palencia Mountains, to the north of the Cantabrian mountain range, you may visit the Picos de Europa and the National Park.

The route includes the following Paradores:

Cervera de Pisuerga: First and second days

This route is a true fantasy of nature and art. The Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre Nature Reserve is a varied natural museum filled with ecosystems, luxuriant valleys, native flora and fauna, and scenery and locations of incomparable beauty. In this region there rises a spectacular and virtually unknown mountain chain, some of whose peaks top 2,000 meters, a natural space bathed by lovely glacial lakes. Whether on foot, in a 4x4, or however you choose to travel, discovering this area is a true pleasure for all the senses. There are locations of special natural interest, such as Ruesga and the Estrecho Valley, La Pernía and Fuente Cobre, the Route of the Lakes, the Peña del Oso Trail, and more.

After a day of nature, we can dedicate our second day to art with a capital A. The Palentine Mountains contain one of the greatest concentrations of Romanesque buildings in all Europe. Just a few kilometers from Cervera, heading towards Potes, we come to the town of San Salvador de Cantamuda with its 12th-century Romanesque collegiate church. Traveling towards Herrera de Pisuerga we find Perazancas, with its Asunción Church, dating from the 12th century. The 11th-century church of San Pelayo displays the influence of Catalan Romanesque in its Lombard arches. Santa Eulalia Chapel in Barrio de Sta. María is small in size. San Andrés de Arroyo Monastery is an extremely interesting monument to the Romanesque style, and a jewel of 12th-century Palentine art

Fuente Dé: Third day

The reception staff at the Parador de Cervera will be pleased to provide you with information about various options for a visit to Fuente Dé, allowing you to discover the beauty and majesty of the Picos de Europa Mountains. To the north of the Cantabrian Mountains lies one of the most spectacular and lovely regions on the Iberian Peninsula: the Picos de Europa Mountains and the national park of the same name. The Parador is an exceptional place to lodge and an excellent setting-off point from which to discover this spectacular natural setting. The Fuente Dé cable railway (teleférico), located near the Parador, allows you to comfortably ascend to the heart of the Central Massif, or Urrieles, the Passes of Aliva. Parador staff can recommend any number and variety of available routes to enjoy this spectacular setting.
